Yesannie, a 29-year old from Davao City, is an experienced teacher. A graduate of elementary education, she started as on office based online teacher for Japanese and Korean students back in 2011. To be with her son, she traded her office-based online teaching job for a home-based position made possible by 51Talk early in 2015. With the transition, not only has she been able to enhance her teaching skills but helped many Chinese students speak better English.
“Being part of 51Talk is like being a part of a fairy tale. Despite the struggles, at the end of the day, it’s always a happy ending.”
Teaching online can sometimes be a challenge for any teacher. For Yesannie, she finds teaching kids as her biggest obstacle. Some of her young students have a tendency to focus on numerous matters all at once and this hampers their focus when lessons are being conducted. When teaching online, Yesannie mixes the use of educational videos, toys and other visual aids that are related to the lessons. She believes that this method encourages her students to learn. She also likes to use quotes as this increases the students’ appetite to gain new knowledge.
Yesannie has stories to share on her students’ achievements. Frank, 38-years old, had to deal with many foreigners as he was in the gaming industry. Speaking in English became a challenge for Frank as he had a hard time forming complete sentences and pronouncing English words. To further develop Frank’s English skills, Yesannie related the lessons to Frank’s situation by pretending to be the foreigners that Frank encounters in his workplace. After months of studying with Yesannie, Frank became a better speaker. He gained confidence speaking to his foreign clients. He also got accepted at an international gaming company, the dream job he had been eyeing for a long time. “I have nothing but good things to say about Yesannie. She helped make my English better and also helped me get the job I’ve been wanting to have. Thank you very much for being a great teacher,” Frank said. Frank is still taking lessons with Yesannie and continues to develop his grasp of the language.
“Being part of 51Talk is like being a part of a fairy tale. Despite the struggles, at the end of the day, it’s always a happy ending. The training and enrichment programs enhanced my teaching knowledge while the flexible time allowed me to spend more time with my family. The compensation that I receive also made it possible for me to invest in a car,” said Yesannie. While she came online initially for financial reasons, she has also fallen in love with 51Talk and her online learners because of her dedication to education.
